Competitor analysis is an integral part of any marketing strategy, be it offline or online.
One of the key determinants of the success of a SEO/ SEM campaign is to do an extensive research on what your competitors are doing. Practically it is not possible to get exact statistics of a competitor’s website without having access to the web analytics tool used by them.
Hence, Competitor website analytics could become a big challenge for many online marketers. There are hundreds of free competitive analysis tools available all over the internet and you really do not know which one is reliable. To put it simply, none of the free tools are reliable. At best they can only give you indicative information. These tools usually generate normalized results of a data set. However, to get a comparison and a high level assessment of the performance of your competitors, you may use SEM RUSH.
Personally, I had been using SEMRUSH for a while and it does give you some useful information on the following:
Some of the free reports being generated by SEMRUSH are as follows:
- Organic Search Traffic
- Paid Search Traffic
- Organic vs Paid traffic over time
- Top Organic Keywords
- Top Organic Competitors
Percentage of Branded Search
- Top Paid keywords
- Paid Keywords Position Distribution
- Top Paid Competitors
- Top 5 Backlinks and Anchor Texts
- Referring Domains
- Indexed Pages
Additionally SEMRUSH also offers the Projects API and the Analytics API.
Projects API allows the users to manage, create and edit projects and use the site audit and position tracking tools. So, if you are an SEO agency managing multiple projects, you can use this API to track your competitors from a single interface.
The Analytics API fetches the analytics report to a custom user interface.
SEMRUSH has a paid version too. The monthly changes range from USD 69.95 to USD 549.95.
However, USD 149.95/ month is the best bet. My reasons are:
– Generates 30000 results per report – More than optimum
– 5000 report a day – a lot indeed!!
– 50 Projects – Good for a startup.
– 1500 keywords to track.
Buying the annual plan saves a few good bucks.
The purpose of using SEMRUSH should be limited to competitor analysis. At no point you can use this as a web analytics tool replacement. It gives a more that decent idea of what your competitors are doing ad how are they investing on their marketing efforts.
Note : SEMRUSH also offers a free Firefox plugin – SEOQUAKE
